This PÖFF is going to be remembered by those of us at DMovies as the year when the weather we left behind us in the UK was colder and more wintry than the weather in Tallinn, where the average seemed to be between five and minus one degrees, very mild for this time of year. I’m checking the weather forecast over there as I write from the UK, to see that it is warmer still this week, and up to seven degrees tomorrow. Global warming is real, people.

QUICK AND DIRTY: LIVE FROM TALLINNThis starts off deceptively harmless with singing children’s voices, cutting into accompanying images of a school play with the children costumed as various types of flowers.

QUICK AND DIRTY: LIVE FROM TALLINNCredited on the Festival’s website as a Canadian production in the Burmese and Chinese languages, this is a Chinese-made film not sanctioned by the Chinese authorities dealing with subject matter which the filmmakers fear would not be passed by the Chinese censor. A number of the film’s cast and crew have used pseudonyms to avoid prosecution. The narrative takes place in the mountainous, Southern region of China close to the border with Myanmar.

QUICK AND DIRTY: LIVE FROM TALLINNVery seldom do historical romantic dramas prove worthwhile. There is something about the genre that encourages reactionary politics that cater to bourgeois interests, often while superficially passing as progressive or feminist, that easily becomes unbearable. After all, how often do you come across historical dramas centred on the affairs of the peasantry rather than the royals? And to add an age gap to the equation? No thanks.

QUICK AND DIRTY: LIVE FROM TALLINNSoujiro Sanada’s Okamoto opens with a story about a boy’s curiosity towards the naked flame of a candle. It’s a strange type of prologue that drifts into a sped-up black and white montage sequence that is comprised of clips from the film itself.
