WEYMOUTH - After a shutout loss to Walpole in extra innings last Wednesday, Weymouth softball coach Vanessa Haen knew her team needed to take a step back. The loss was the third in a row for the Wildcats, and their second time being shutout during that stretch. “I think that we were starting to get in our heads a little bit,” Haen said. “We took three days off, so we have not been on a field since we played Walpole. And we played a great game with them.

The New England Revolution enter Saturday riding a five-game winning streak, including their 2-1 win over Rhode Island FC on Wednesday in the U.S. Open Cup. The midweek game presented a new puzzle for coach Caleb Porter but so far he and the team have taken the challenge in stride. Porter made sure to use plenty of his bench players on Wednesday so he’d fave a fully rest starting XI in Orlando on Saturday. “We knew it was going to be a long week,” Porter said.

Entering the bottom of the seventh inning down by a run, Belchertown was in prime position to walk things off against Agawam. After Thatcher Rudnik tied the game with an RBI single, and was followed up by an Ian McDonald hit, Josh Misiaszek stepped to the plate. With two on, the senior launched a ball over the outfield fence for a three-run, walk-off home run to win the game 5-2 for the Orioles. The home run was the second hit of the game for Misiaszek who also had an Rbi single in the contest.

On Wednesday, the Revolution will travel just 20 miles to face Rhode Island FC for the round of 32 of the 110th Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. “That’s going to come pretty fast and it’s going to be an important game,” Revolution coach Caleb Porter said last week. “It’s a Cup game, and Rhode Island is going to be motivated. All those guys want our guys’ jobs.

After the second quarter, Belchertown (1-10) was looking at a four-goal deficit against Hampshire Regional (5-5). The Orioles then played an incredible second half, scoring six times and allowing just one goal to win 9-8 on the road on Saturday, their first victory of the year. Doing much of the scoring for the Orioles was Lia Pikul who tallied five goals in the contest. Also contributing for Belchertown was McKenzie LePage with three, and Aubrey McCain with one.
