TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Area residents on Wednesday will have the opportunity to support local organizations that serve the Shawnee, Douglas and Jefferson county communities. Organizers are hoping to raise $40,000 on Wednesday -- up $5,000 from the $35,000 that was raised last year. As of around 10 p.m. Wednesday, a total of $23,057.22 had been received. UWKV’s Angel Romero visited Eye on NE Kansas to share why the money raised is so important.

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A man has been charged in connection with an officer-involved shooting incident that occurred this past week in west-central Topeka. Shawnee County District Attorney Mike Kagay announced today that his office has charged one person in relation to an incident on May 23rd, 2025, in the 1500 block of SW 24th Street, in Topeka, Shawnee County, Kansas, where the suspect exchanged gunfire with officers.

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Emergency crews were responding to a two-vehicle injury crash late Thursday morning in central Topeka. The crash was reported around 10:57 a.m. Thursday at S.W. 17th and Buchanan streets. The location was about three blocks east of the Washburn University campus. At least one person was reported to have been injured in the crash. There was no immediate word on the severity of injuries that resulted from the collision. Additional details weren’t immediately available.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) - A female corrections officer was attacked by a man over the weekend at the Riley County Jail, officials said. The incident was reported around 5:17 a.m. Saturday at the jail, located at the Riley County Police Department complex at 1001 S. Seth Child Road in Manhattan. Officials said a 31-year-old male was listed as a suspect for battering a 25-year-old female corrections officer as she performed her duties at the jail.
