It’s not often an architecture firm is given the opportunity to work on a historically significant residence, but that was the case for Sydney firm Cadence & Co, which was approached by the owners of this Georgian Revival home in Sydney’s North Shore. ‘The home is listed on the Australian Institute of Architects’ 20th Century Buildings of Significance Register. It’s a rare example of Georgian revival architecture interwoven with Art Deco detail,’ says principal Michael Kilkeary.

Materiality and detailing are abundant in the home. ‘We used American walnut timber throughout the apartment to bring warmth and richness. The darker tone adds depth and also references North American interior design, which the homeowner appreciates, so this is a nod to his home there,’ Cheng says.

This year’s edition of Melbourne Design Week is organised around the timely idea of design as an ‘act of repair and transformation’, showcasing projects that can ‘heal, replenish and enable life’. With this in mind, Aesop has continued its partnership with experimental design studio Other Matter to explore the possibilities of new materials, in this case bioplastics. This year, the collaboration will take the form of an interactive exhibition across four Aesop stores in the city centre.

The two are connected via a covered glazed entry pavilion and present a private frontage to the street with strategically placed shrouded windows overlooking the park opposite. Both the main house and guest suite needed to have a seamless connection to the garden, outdoor dining space and swimming pool, says Tang, and this was achieved via large sliding doors and windows that blend indoor and out.
