(KSWO) - With August being State Work Period, Congress does not meet, so Senator James Lankford paid a visit to Lawton to tour the veteran care facilities in town. “We really are just here to serve,” said Clinic Director of Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at Red Rock, Larken Wofford. “We’re here to serve veterans, active service members and their families, so having the Senator come visit is just a way for us to share with him that we’re here and we want to be of service.

LAWTON, Okla. (KSWO) - Larry Walls came to Lawton in 1989 as a military transplant and is now running for Lawton City Council Ward One. After 20 years of active service, he went into law enforcement and corrections, working for the Lawton Correctional Facility and the Comanche County Detention Center until he retired in May of this year. He decided to stay in Lawton because he loves the city and residents here, and that’s also one of the reasons why he decided to run for City Council.

LAWTON, Okla. (KSWO) - The Greater Galilee Baptist Church held its annual Youth Activity Day Saturday and kids were able to learn about different things they were interested in. They learned about automotive maintenance, CPR, and computer use, just to name a few. Reverend Christopher Foster, the youth minister at Greater Galilee Baptist Church, said it felt great to be able to put this event on again following the pandemic.

LAWTON, Okla. (KSWO) - It’s the first day of school for students in Lawton, and although it can be a very exciting time, there are also some things to be aware of as kids return to the classroom. It’s important to be aware of the school zones as the new school year starts. As kids arrive and leave school, the speed limit drops to 20-25 miles per hour for safety. It’s also important to remember that if a school bus is stopped, do not pass.

LAWTON, Okla. (KSWO) - Starting Monday, August 12 there will be a traffic change as 67th Street just South of Gore Boulevard will be closed. Traffic heading south of Gore will need to detour east and drivers traveling north past Gore will need to re-route. The city says for drivers to plan ahead and expect delays during construction. The work is expected to last for two weeks but could take longer if there are any unforeseen issues. You can see a map of where construction is set to take place below.
