This photo shows him when he was only a young boy playing the organ in church – you can see he has the hands of a musician. Very few people know that Seamus was a fine musician, he also had a wonderful tone on the saxophone. This photo was taken at the Kimmage Seminary of the Holy Ghost Brothers where Seamus was studying to be a Christian Brother at the age of 14, also a little-known fact. He eventually became an apprentice with Murphy’s the painters in Selskar.

Café awnings that were normally used to shade the customers from sunshine, were now used to protect stacked dining chairs from the torrential downpour. The taxi was booked for 9.30, that time had passed and still no sign. We were out on the street hoping that the rain wouldn’t resume while we we were huddled in by the graffitied wall on that obscure Athens laneway.

A well-groomed man of medium height with a mop of grey curls and an indefatigable desire to be positive, he drew me near like a magnet. It had been a couple of years, a full pandemic since I had last seen him. He had been to my Whelan’s gig, but I didn’t know that. He brought up Donegal again, and I suggested August 2023, so far away it was improbable, but by the time this summer came around, it became impossibly real.

Her death caused a great stir that travelled across the world, affecting even the most skeptical. A controversial woman with a lot of moxy, she was almost forgotten as a musical force. Just like Diana, Princess of Wales, Sinead’s behaviour in public could be abrasive and frank.
