The 13-year-old had been swimming off Glenfield Beach, about 400 kilometres north of Perth near Geraldton, when he got caught in a rip and was struggling to stay above water.

    Geraldton's iconic yellow submarine has berthed in its new home after years of planning, restoration and a contentious debate over where it should be displayed. Built in 1968, the submarine was intended to help search for rock lobster but that role was abandoned when battery emissions made it impossible to work in. This was the case for volunteer firefighter Chris Scott, who still remembers the first time he came across a road fatality while responding to what he thought was a bushfire.
