Markets in the second quarter of the year have been closely watching developments in policy and regulation. President Donald Trump’s heavy dose of tariffs on US imports and a potential ban on the export of scrap from Europe could both have wide-reaching consequences – although non-ferrous metals were included in the list of materials exempt from tariffs. Aluminium is not included in the 2 April (‘Liberation Day’) tariffs as it is covered by earlier tariffs.

According to bvse chairman Mike Hayes, the European recovered paper market remains ‘extremely volatile’. He also told the 500+ delegates gathered in Bonn that German recyclers had realised a strong utilisation rate of 83% in 2024. ‘Germany’s paper recycling surely deserves a round of applause. The European average is stuck at 70%, with some member states managing only 50%. Well done to everyone in the sector for making this happen.

The BBC report said that millions of tyres were being treated at illegal pyrolysis plants in India, despite export paperwork indicating they were being processed properly. It highlighted hazardous and potentially lethal conditions around these plants for both workers and nearby communities. Most UK operators have tightly regulated environmental permits and are inspected regularly. Tyres should be shredded ahead of export.

The scrap for the recycled coil was sourced through the Automotive Circularity Platform (ACP), which was initiated together with thyssenkrupp Materials Services.
