THE Environmental Management Agency (Ema) has condemned a housing development project being undertaken in Greystone Park, Borrowdale, saying its location is a wetland area. In a statement on Wednesday, Ema said the project started without the necessary environmental licences on a clearly defined wetland. Ema said the wetland had distinctive black clay and other ecological indicators, prompting it to issue tickets and an environmental protection order to cease operations.

THE Indigenous Advisory Practitioners Association of Zimbabwe (IAPAZ) has expressed concern over the phased retrenchment proposed by Triangle Limited, a subsidiary of Tongaat Hulett. Triangle Limited recently announced plans for mass retrenchment, citing viability challenges and attributing the phased retrenchment exercise to a combination of rising operational costs, currency instability, inflationary pressures and the adverse effects of government policies.

THE National Blood Services Zimbabwe (NBSZ) is targeting to collect 88 430 units of blood by the end of 2024 as it seeks to build reserves amid dwindling stocks. NBSZ launched a campaign running from December 6 to January 14 to collect 7 460 units of blood across the country during the period.

SWEDISH ambassador to Zimbabwe, Per Lindgarde, has decried the alarming statistics of gender-based violence (GBV) and child marriages in Zimbabwe saying urgent action is required to end the vices. Globally, a woman is killed every 10 minutes. According to available statistics, in Zimbabwe, 22 women are raped daily; one woman is abused every 75 minutes and an average of 646 women are sexually abused each month. One in three girls under 18 is married off.
