I come from a land of milk, honey, and stupid people. Since I’m neither lactose-intolerant nor diabetic yet, the first two items on the list are okay with me. It’s the stupid people who terrify me the most. Stupid people are indeed terrifying. Across the globe, they represent the majority, which is what makes majoritarianism so frightening. The worst part is that you can’t escape them, as they are omnipresent. The fact that they are content with themselves is even more frightening.

It’s hard for me to understand why people vote against their own interests. Perhaps it’s a question that bothered Gramsci as well before he embarked on his prison notebooks: why does the ordinary person-on-the-street support fascism? Why do they not ask for a just society when it is precisely the victims of injustice who have the most to gain from such a society? Why do they not ask for better working conditions? Why don’t they fight for work that suits their natural abilities and personality?

It was reported on September 15th 2023 that the U.S., Britain and Canada are imposing more sanctions on Iran right before the one-year death anniversary of Mahsa Amini who lost her life thanks to Iran’s morality police. I would like to know if the resistance movement in Iran made such a request to the governments of the US, Canada and Britain to impose sanctions on “people and entities” of their country, thus adding to the difficulties they are already suffering?

Normally, I prefer academics to remain separate from politics. It’s fashionable among certain groups to “politicize” everything, which, basically means, one key for every lock on this planet. They hold the bizarre view that everything is “political;” therefore, not to talk about politics in a classroom is somehow being unfaithful to this idea of what academia means. I strongly subscribe to the conventional view that academics are meant for personal and professional growth.

Like most people, I either read or watch news online. Newspapers and TV channels were important through most years of my life. I’m not averse to them. It’s just that they have been colonized by vested interests, which is why I intend to look at news selectively and in places and people I trust. I’m accommodative of people in general. But I’m not accommodating of what I read and watch. I need to make sure that the source of the stuff I go through is at least fairly reliable.

The American activist and media critic, Norman Solomon, made me think along these lines: do we see India’s opposition parties in general, the Indian National Congress (INC), in particular, on the neoliberal side while placing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led NDA on the neofascist side? This is the distinction Norman Solomon applies to the Democrats under the leadership of Joe Biden as opposed to the Republican Party under someone like Donald Trump.
