    WHO has prequalified the first self-test for hepatitis C virus (HCV), specifically designed for lay users. The burden of HCV infections still poses a substantial global health challenge. Despite the development of direct-acting antiviral therapies with response rates of more than 95%, limited access to diagnostic tests and treatment has resulted in chronic infection and consequential serious illness and progressive liver damage for millions of individuals worldwide.

    An outbreak of Marburg virus disease was declared in Tanzania on Jan 20, 2025. As of Feb 10, two patients with confirmed Marburg virus disease and eight probable patients have been reported, all of whom have died. 90 suspected cases have tested negative for the virus. All ten patients were located in the Biharamulo district of the Kagera region in northwest Tanzania, near the border with Rwanda, which itself recently experienced an outbreak of Marburg virus disease from Sept 27 to Dec 20, 2024.

    The UK's National Health Service (NHS) has launched the world's largest prospective trial of using artificial intelligence (AI) to assess routine mammogram screenings. Nearly 700 000 women who have booked routine screenings in the UK will be invited to participate from April, 2025.
