INTRODUCTION Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a chronic, rare autoimmune disease affecting approximately 80,000 patients in the US (1, 2). SSc is characterized by progressive autoimmunity, inflammation, microvascular damage, collagen deposition, and subsequent fibrosis of the skin and internal organs, which contributes to substantial morbidity and premature death (3-7).
