And perhaps more than any other Enlightenment thinker, the world is still wrestling very much with his work. Smith often gets the credit (or blame) for the invention of capitalism, an economic system we are now told is in its “late stage.” But, of course, Smith did not invent capitalism. He observed and described it as a condition of human nature.
