We need to get ahead of this thing. I’ve heard this refrain countless times over the past two years in AI policy circles. But listen closely, and you’ll discover the real message underneath, a quiet admission of past failure: We didn’t move quickly enough when it came to social media and we cannot make the same mistake with AI. Just this year, over 1,000 AI bills have been proposed in the states.

The goal of New York State’s Responsible AI Safety and Education (RAISE) Act—protecting people from AI harms—is admirable. But by assuming that AI models themselves are the key leverage point for ensuring safety, RAISE risks turning a technical challenge into a bureaucratic burden. Authored by State Assemblymember Alex Bores, the RAISE Act applies a list of requirements meant to ensure that AI technologies get deployed and are used in a responsible manner.

ICYMI: Today I have an op-ed in the City Journal explaining why New York's RAISE Act risks turning the technical challenge of AI safety into a bureaucratic burden with all of its requirements. My tweet thread is here. I have also recently written on the collapse of software jobs, the evidence so far of AI’s real impact on jobs, whether NEPA should apply to BEAD broadband grants, and US-China competition in AI. We need to get ahead of this thing.

The Dupont Circle Citizens Association came out against the deckover earlier this year. While they do some good things in the neighborhood, the DCCA has a strong NIMBY streak.

A plan to build a plaza over the Connecticut Avenue underpass will reshape a busy corridor. Some neighbors aren't convinced it's a good idea. Here’s what to know about the Dupont Circle “deckover” project: https://t.co/EtvwDISitn

A decision in Bartz v. Anthropic, an important case on fair use in AI, just dropped. kristian explains what it means in the thread and the linked post below.

1/8 My analysis of Bartz v. Anthropic highlights a key fair use ruling for generative AI. Judge Alsup found that using copyrighted works to train LLMs for new text generation was "quintessentially transformative" under copyright law.
