With prices continuing to rise and students struggling to make ends meet, it is perhaps unsurprising that the number of people taking part in university sport has hit a stumbling block. However, September’s significance goes beyond a return to academia and the changing of seasons: September is Suicide Awareness Month. Between March 2023 and May 2024, 5,324 deaths by suicide were reported in England, 519 of these (almost 10%) were in people aged 10 to 24.

Joshua Bruyns, a competitive speed climber, is one of the University of Warwick students who was selected for the 2024 Olympic Games. The Boar Sport spoke to Bruyns about his journey to, and experience in, Paris. The discipline of speed climbing was introduced to the Olympics at Tokyo 2020 and consists of a one-on-one showdown between two climbers. These competitors climb a 15 metre wall with an overhang of 5 degrees.
