We had a staff meeting recently where we all went around and named the character who made us love John Lithgow and the choices were as varied as his career. Mine is Reverend Shaw Moore, the pastor from the movie Footloose, who banned dancing in his small Texas town and, in doing so, gave Kevin Bacon one of the best "I'm-so-mad-I-need-to-do-gymnastics!" scenes of all time.

That book catapulted into pop culture when Hulu turned it into a series starring Elisabeth Moss. But to define Atwood by that particular book, that particular story of a dystopian America where women are enslaved, raped and forced to bear children — as provocative as that is — is incomplete. It's just a small part of Atwood's lifework.
