Two Liberal Democrat councillors in East Yorkshire have defected to become Independent after they said they were unable to support rising council tax and rent bills. Julia Conner and Sherilee Jepmond, who both represent the Longhill and Bilton ward, are now listed as Independents on the Hull City Council website. The move has reduced the Liberal Democrat council majority to one on the council. The party has 29 councillors, Labour has 25 and there are now three Independents.

Humberside Police said they received reports about a white Mercedes Sprinter van being involved in the crash on the Mount Pleasant North Roundabout in Hull at about 14:50 GMT on Monday 30 December. The cyclist was taken to hospital where he died on Monday 13 January.

A pensioner has been jailed for 15 years after being found guilty of attempting to rape a teenage girl. Kenneth Pickering, 70, of Boston Road, Horncastle, was sentenced on Monday after being convicted of six charges following a trial at Lincoln Crown Court. They included four offences of assault by penetration, one charge of attempted rape and one offence of sexual assault. During sentencing, Judge Simon Hirst told Pickering he had used his victim for his "own sexual satisfaction".
Lincoln Lights: Illuminated trail set for February

Lincoln is to get an illuminated light trail next month. Lincoln Lights will run for two nights on 20 and 21 of February. The event will feature an array of installations, projections and light-based artwork in the city centre between 17:30 and 19:30 GMT each day. Sam Lindley from organisers Threshold Studios said they hoped the event would show the city "in a new way".
Cyclist seriously injured after hit-and-run

A cyclist has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after being involved in a hit-and-run near a roundabout. Dorset Police said they received a report of a collision involving a vehicle and a bicycle on Castle Lane West, near to the Broadway Roundabout, in Bournemouth, at 22:15 GMT on Friday. The cyclist, aged in his 20s, was taken to hospital for treatment and his family have been informed, while the other vehicle involved failed to stop at the scene.
