    When I was pregnant for the first time, I believed that I’d have a vaginal birth, without an epidural, in which I’d call on my deepest inner strength to push my baby to this side of the veil. That focus on myself as an individual is where I went wrong. But I wouldn’t know that until many years later, until I’d learned about the history of birth. Labor—in my case, back labor with unrelenting contractions—ended up looking nothing like these fantasies.
