The Wilmington Fire Department responded to a call on the 700 block of Maryland Avenue shortly before 6:30 p.m. tonight, after receiving reports of a vehicle crashing into a building. Upon arriving at the scene, fire crews discovered that an unoccupied daycare center, Young Expressions, had been struck by an SUV. The impact caused significant damage to the exterior wall of the building. However, no one was inside at the time of the collision.

The American Red Cross is encouraging people to make an appointment to donate blood or platelets, in an effort to keep the nation’s supply strong through the middle of summer. Officials say the seasonal drop in donations is a serious concern, as donated blood can be critical in emergencies.

Juneteenth has become a federal holiday in recent years, commemorating the emancipation of the last enslaved people in Texas in June 1865. The Historic Odessa Foundation is commemorating Juneteenth with free tours at the Corbit-Sharp House, highlighting its connection to the Underground Railroad. Johnnye Baker, Education Curator with the foundation, says their goal is to tell the most accurate, local stories as possible.
