Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony could be removed from office if he doesn’t clear up statements he made last week reflecting a perceived lack of commitment to helping feds enforce immigration law, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier warned Monday. Uthmeier said he sent a two-page letter to Tony on Monday, demanding the Sheriff’s Office’s cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and threatening consequences up to and including removal from office if Tony were to fail to comply.

A Fort Lauderdale teenager who admitted he accidentally shot his friend to death in Wilton Manors last September while both were playing with handguns has been sentenced to serve between 18 and 36 months in a maximum risk juvenile facility. The juvenile sanctions represent a break for Herbe Belony, 17, who had been charged as an adult and faced a maximum of 15 years in prison if convicted at trial. After he is out of custody, Belony will be on conditional release until he turns 21.

After more than 25 years under the protection of the Broward Sheriff’s Office, Pompano Beach is counting the cost of re-establishing its own independent police force, a move that could prove even costlier than sticking with the Sheriff’s Office. The cost of staying put has been growing dramatically over the past three years, from $53 million in fiscal year 2022 to $63 million in fiscal year 2025, according to the city’s budget.

All eastbound lanes of Interstate 595 between State Road 7 and I-95 will be shut down overnight Tuesday and Wednesday, and the Florida Highway Patrol will be diverting traffic. The closures will give construction crews the opportunity to install new overhead signs, according to the Florida Department of Transportation. Starting at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, one eastbound lane will be closed on I-595 east starting at the State Road 7/U.S. 441 exit, according to the department of transportation.

Three Broward Sheriff’s deputies are facing charges of aggravated battery causing great bodily harm stemming from an alleged rough encounter with a woman they were booking into the jail in 2022, court records show. Deputy Denia Walker, 37; Deputy Cleopatra Johnnie, 47; and Sgt. Zakiyyah Polk, 44, were booked into the Broward Main Jail on Thursday, jail and court records show.
