After more than 25 years under the protection of the Broward Sheriff’s Office, Pompano Beach is counting the cost of re-establishing its own independent police force, a move that could prove even costlier than sticking with the Sheriff’s Office. The cost of staying put has been growing dramatically over the past three years, from $53 million in fiscal year 2022 to $63 million in fiscal year 2025, according to the city’s budget.

All eastbound lanes of Interstate 595 between State Road 7 and I-95 will be shut down overnight Tuesday and Wednesday, and the Florida Highway Patrol will be diverting traffic. The closures will give construction crews the opportunity to install new overhead signs, according to the Florida Department of Transportation. Major construction is about to get underway on a stretch of Sunrise Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale off Interstate 95, according to the Florida Department of Transportation. Among the improvements will be the widening of the road to accommodate dual right-turn lanes onto the interstate, a wrong-way-driver detection system and upgrading traffic signals, said transportation spokesman Guillermo Canedo.

The Broward Housing Council issued its official annual report to the county this past week, celebrating the hundreds of units of affordable housing that are under construction or in development. At six locations in Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood and Hallandale Beach, developers are putting up a large number of units, 685 of them set aside as affordable workplace housing. Each of the developments received support from Broward over the last few years.

The Urban League of Broward County bought a parcel of land more than 20 years ago at the intersection of Northwest 21st Avenue and Northwest 26th Street in Oakland Park. The plan, then, was to build a new headquarters for the civil-rights organization. Plans change. Now, with the Urban League leading the way, there’s a new plan for that parcel and for the 19.4 acres north and west of it: 469 residential units for low- and middle-income families, most for rent, with 114 townhomes for sale.
