Within the past few months three people I’ve loved dearly have died. One of them, my nephew, Jason, died in October, suddenly and without warning. The others, my cousin Kathy and my nephew Chuck, fought their battles with cancer and lost. Kathy died just weeks ago, after only a few months of being told, and Chuck died two days ago, mere weeks after the discovery that cancer was wracking his body.

I thought about starting this off with FDR’s famous quote, “You have nothing to fear but fear itself”, but that would be silly. We have plenty to fear. Let’s start there. But where? Where to start? I’m taking a moment out of my busy day, a day where I get to do any damn thing I want to do, to tell all you buggers going on and on about Joe Biden’s age to back off and stop embarrassing yourselves. Joe Biden’s age is nothing compared to Donald Trump’s flagrant, gross criminal behavior. You’re trying to compare the two with age being the only factor, noting that Biden is older than Trump so every gaffe, every slip, every hesitation must mean Biden is as unfit as Trump.

How on earth could it be November already? We had snow yesterday. Just a dusting, nothing to get all excited about, but the decks and roofs sparkled with it while the still-warm earth dissolved the flakes as they landed. It didn’t last long. Still, it was a sign. A warning of what’s to come. A signal that it might be time to pack up and leave, at least for the winter. I’ve already been packing to leave this place, with the idea that I’d be moving on for good. But it’s not going to happen. Not yet.

Life is quiet here on the island and at the moment it’s very near perfect. Mornings and evenings are cool and when the sun does beat down, a step into our always abundant shade is all it takes. Ten degrees cooler. At least. With the heatwaves in the news, I’m up here thinking how awful it must be to live in those places where shade gives no respite from heat and sweat, and even the act of breathing takes some effort.
