It’s 2025, and that means Golden Demon has come back, and with the announcement made on January 2nd, we know where the competition will be taking place, along with some rule changes. Let’s dig in. If you’re new to the competitive painting scene, Golden Demon is a miniature painting competition hosted by Games Workshop, first established in 1987. It is the longest running miniature painting competition in the world, and has been hosted all over the world.

It used to be that asymmetrical wargames were a niche part of the hobby, a subcategory of weird kids right next to those that played 18xx train games. To some extent that’s still the case, but on the other hand, one of the heaviest games you can find in Target is Root, a wargame. Yes, a diluted wargame, but a wargame nonetheless.

When it comes to wargames, a lot of folks tend to not play them because the barrier to entry is high. Models, books, assembling miniatures, painting minis, buying terrain, making time for a game…it all stacks up, and then you find yourself with a pile of gray, no time, and no one to play with. Battletech, proper Battletech, has some of these issues. The books can be pretty hefty, and to build a proper lance takes time and money to put together, though not as bad as other wargames.

When I started painting in 2015, there weren’t too many brands out there. As I mentioned in my review of the Army Painter Fanatic line, I was lost in a sea of tools and brands, but paint wise, there were just a handful of companies offering paint. Nearly ten years later, there are at least fifteen brands I can name off the top of my head.

Somewhere in the world a bell tolls, a city drowns, and something wakes in the deep. The Flood Bell Tolls in Saint Magnus is a system neutral gothic setting that packs more quality and ideas into its 84 pages than many boxed sets I’ve seen. St. Magnus is a lost place where fell magics swirl in its rising waters. Its wet, dreary fantasy very much evokes 2017’s Hard to Be a God, but with the kind of flair for the weird that makes it a perfect place for adventures.

Dune: Fall of the Imperium, a campaign sourcebook to be used as an addition to Dune: Adventures in the Imperium, published by Modiphius Games, is an excellent addition to an already excellent RPG, providing a ton of adventures that happen concurrently with the events of Dune and Dune Messiah , allowing your player characters to interact with key characters and influence pivotal moments, placing the PC’s right alongside the action. Let’s dig in.

This is by far the most time I’ve spent analyzing and preparing a game for review. After a month of assembling, painting, reading, and finally playing Blood & Plunder by Firelock Games, I will say that this game is perfect for the history and pirate loving gamer in your life, but if you’re not interested in historical wargaming, this might not be your cup of grog. Let’s dig in. Firstly, this game is massive, from both a physical perspective and a content perspective.
