As of Thursday afternoon, the Jones Road Wildfire in Ocean County was 50% contained, according to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service. Officials announced that a 19-year-old man was arrested on arson charges related to the massive wildfire. Prosecutors say Joseph Kling of Waretown allegedly started a bonfire with wooden pallets in the Forked River Mountains Wilderness Area but failed to fully extinguish the bonfire before he left. Kling is being held at the Ocean County Jail pending a hearing.

A state of emergency was declared early Wednesday after a wildfire that ignited in the Pine Barrens rapidly intensified overnight. The fast-moving Jones Road Wildfire in Ocean County forced thousands to evacuate and led to the closure of a section of the Garden State Parkway. “There were 1,300 homes that were threatened during fighting this fire. And this could very well be the largest wildfire in New Jersey in 20 years,” said Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Shawn LaTourette.

Forty Stockton University students recently met one-on-one with 40 students from grades 3 through 8 for a hands-on art workshop hosted by the university’s Noyes Museum of Art in Atlantic City. Participants created clay sculptures of ospreys, the university’s mascot and a bird native to the area.
