    A hospital pharmacy closed down in April after equipment used to extract fumes from the manufacture of chemotherapy medicines was found be not connected to the ventilation system reopened on Wednesday. The Health Services Authority added it had also moved the preparation of the medicines to the George Town Hospital’s chemotherapy department “designated cleanroom” for safety reasons, although tests had shown there was no “hazardous contamination” detected in the pharmacy.

    The Grand Court on Monday cut the sentences of a husband and wife convicted of human smuggling. But the court ruled the conviction, as well as two others for illegal entry to Cayman and failure to complete a disembarkation form as soon as their sailing yacht arrived, should not be quashed. Justice Cheryll Richards reduced the 52-year-old English man’s sentence for people smuggling from 48 to 33 months and his wife’s sentence from 40 to 25 months.

    A 42-year-old woman who caused a crash in which a friend died of massive head injuries was on Friday sentenced to two years and two months in prison. Justice Cheryll Richards told Ygnacia Rafaelina Francisco Payero that the level of carelessness she had shown was close to dangerous driving. She highlighted that the defendant only had a provisional Cayman licence and had been drinking before the crash, which placed her at the higher end of the scale.

    A report issued by the domestic observers of April’s general election has recommended that the time polling stations are open should be reduced by three hours, from the present 6pm closing time to 3pm. The change would reduce voting time from 11 hours to eight hours. “This adjustment would allow for earlier commencement of the counting process and help reduce the workload and stress on election officers,” the report stated.
