Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a serious and common mental health disorder that results from a complex array of genetic, environmental, psychological, and biological factors (1). The prevalence of MDD in adults in the United States was estimated at 8.4% in 2020 (2). This illness can lead to devastating consequences ranging from self-harm to suicide (3). Suicide rates reached an all-time high in 2022, becoming one of the leading causes of death in the United States (4).

Sammie Rude Compton is an Oklahoma Native who shares a story as big as the western sky in her book The Cowboy Ike Rude Riding into the Wind. The book is a biography of her father, Ike Rude. An attempt was made to publish a book about Ike in the 1950’s, but it was turned down because the publisher felt the story was too unbelievable to sell as non-fiction. Sammie’s mother, Cleo Rude (Couch), pleaded with her for years to write a book about her dad.

Nowadays she is showcasing her skills on an international TV show and teaching at baking conferences across the country. Brooke grew up in the Texas Panhandle. She spent her youth competing in rodeos. She got the nickname “Cookie” in high school because she would bake treats as payment for people letting her use their practice pen.
