The bravery of a group of police officers in Northern Ireland who rescued two adults and two children from a burning house in Co Tyrone has been hailed by the region’s deputy chief constable. A 70-year-old woman and a 37-year-old man are critically ill in hospital following the blaze at the property in Dungannon on Monday night. Two children, aged seven and 10, were described as being in stable condition, while eight police officers taken to hospital for smoke inhalation have been released.

The Irish Government will “not be found wanting” in regard to co-operating with the Omagh bomb Inquiry, Tánaiste Simon Harris has insisted. Mr Harris, who is also foreign minister, said he wanted to provide a “categoric” assurance that his government would find a legal mechanism to ensure all requested material is supplied to the UK inquiry into the 1998 attack.

Families of two of those killed in the IRA’s Teebane atrocity are seeking answers from a new state legacy body. Eight men were killed on January 17, 1992 and others were seriously injured when a roadside bomb exploded as a van passed the Teebane crossroads in Co Tyrone. The men were construction workers who had been carrying out repair work at a British Army base in Omagh. This Sunday a roadside service will mark the 33rd anniversary of the bombing.

The son of a woman murdered and secretly buried by the IRA has called the portrayal of her death in a new drama series “cruel”. Michael McConville, who was a child in 1972 when his mother Jean was abducted from their west Belfast home, said her death is “not entertainment” but his and his family’s reality for the last 52 years. Mrs McConville is known as one of the Disappeared, a group of 17 people who were abducted, killed and secretly buried by republican paramilitaries during the Troubles.
