Making Champagne is now a rich man's game, but a century ago, vineyard owners were destitute and took to the streets to demand "Death to fraudsters." Wines from across France and beyond were shipped into local train stations, disappeared into cellars and emerged as "Champagne." In 1911, when impoverished local grape growers took matters into their own hands, the French army was called in to restore order.
