    What is known about the topic The incidence of postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is high after cardiac surgery (25%–30%) and it is associated with lower quality of life, increased patients' dependency and heightened mortality. Anaesthesia during cardiothoracic surgery is an important risk factor for POCD in older adults, as it adversely affects the brain in various ways, such as by reducing blood flow and oxygen levels.
