Kabir Ahmed sat behind a foldable desk at Darou Salam, a mosque and Islamic school in Melrose, helping two newly arrived immigrants from West Africa get work authorizations. Meanwhile, a group of men gathered on the carpet, organizing a stack of letters to send to employers. Many of them live in shelters with their families, and these letters hold some hope for establishing themselves in the city. “They need help, that is why we are here,” said Ahmed.

Candles lit the brimming streets of Melrose Avenue and women dressed as Catrinas, their faces painted like skulls, marched to honor their beloved dead at seventh annual festival del día de los muertos Saturday October 7th. The march, in the autumn darkness at 6 p.m., had started and ended in the courtyard of the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church, where the Mexican Coalition has its office.

Across the twelve NYCHA developments in Mott Haven, Melrose and Port Morris, elevators broke down 274 times in September. That was slightly better than August, when they broke down 290 times. All told, since January there have been nearly 2,700 unplanned outages in local NYCHA buildings since September 2024, according to data kept by the New York City Housing Authority. Believe it or not, that’s an improvement.

Thousands of cyclists flooded the Grand Concourse headed south at 161st Street on Oct. 6th, for the 30th Anniversary of Tour de Bronx. More than 4,000 riders registered for the free, family-friendly event, which is sponsored by the Bronx Tourism Council and the Office of Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson and others. Riders can choose to complete 10, 25, or 40-mile routes across and through the borough.
