Meanwhile, a group of men gathered on the carpet, organizing a stack of letters to send to employers. Many of them live in shelters with their families, and these letters hold some hope for establishing themselves in the city. “They need help, that is why we are here,” said Ahmed.

September saw an unusual visit to the South Bronx: a meeting between small business leaders, and “Sophia”, an AI-powered robot. Sophia is an AI “humanoid”, created by Hong Kong-based technology company Hanson Robotics. BronxNet demonstrated the machine’s capabilities at their Media and Technology studios in La Central, at the Hub, on September 18. The next day the robot was used as a co-host with BronxNet CEO Michael Max Knobbe at the Bronx Chamber of Commerce Gala at Marina Del Rey.

South Bronx residents gathered on a Sunday morning in September to celebrate the renaming of E. 152nd Street for the ‘saint of the neighborhood’ Michael P. McCauley. McCauley taught at South Bronx churches for over 40 years; first at Immaculate Conception, then St. Jerome’s parish, and finally St. Raymond High School for Boys, and served as a youth advisor, student mentor, and volunteer at several programs. McCauley died of cancer in 2019 at age 64.

A huge government survey of consumers' experiences shows an alarming rise in the number of deceptive business practices and a spike in the number of people targeted by scams. The 2023 Australian Consumer Survey, commissioned by the federal government, collected data from over 5400 people and found a 250% increase in the number of people targeted by scammers, compared to 2016 when the survey was last conducted.
