    To begin our Yuletide celebration, my family and I observed winter solstice on Dec. 21, with a small feast of pork roast to accompany the plaited Yule breads, pumpkin dip, wassail and mulled cider I made, followed by telling of legends and history that created the holiday as we know it today.

    Children of Crossville Chamber Orchestra spun yarns with their strings for the “Music That Tells a Story”-themed annual winter concert at the Palace Theatre on Dec. 14. Opening the concert, James Queen performed “Danse Rustique” by William Squire on the cello, accompanied by Sharon Quick on piano. As his fingers strategically danced along the strings, Queen made his cello sing for the very technical and difficult tribute to Squire’s work.

    Since 2014, Kenzie Parker has been making spirits bright by pairing her giving heart with her money, time and effort for her annual service project, Kenzie’s Kitchen, to make the holidays special for families in need. “This is my ninth year, and I am still counting,” she said. All year long, she saves her money to decide how she wants to put the happy in holidays for families, from buying Christmas toys for area families to purchasing groceries for complete family holiday meals.

    The Plateau Walk to make Alzheimer’s a memory event on Sept. 16 raised $54,775 for Alzheimer’s Tennessee, exceeding its $45,000 goal. The successful Plateau Walk event was celebrated by Alzheimer’s Tennessee Inc. representatives, Plateau Walk participants and team leaders, sponsors and organizers with a luncheon at Tennessee College of Applied Technology on Dec. 13.

    Licensed marriage and family therapist Christine Lister and her friend, Deby Brown, traveled to Israel taking in the sights of the ancient Holy Lands with a touring group that was supposed to conclude Oct. 7. After which, Lister and Brown planned to stay in Israel touring the country on their own through Oct. 17. However, Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel on Saturday, Oct. 7, killing more than 1,400 people and taking dozens as hostages, including Americans.
