As a punishing heat wave takes hold of Texas, weather forecasters are warning that severe storms with hail and even hurricane-force winds could hobble parts of Appalachia and the Midwest. Tornadoes were also a risk for Friday. The National Weather Service said severe weather was likely across parts of the central Appalachians and the Mid-Atlantic states.

A Roane County woman pleaded guilty in Cumberland County Criminal Court to possessing 300 grams or more of meth and received a 25-year prison sentence. Other defendants entered pleas in unrelated cases last week. Brandi Rene Buckholtz, 48, Harriman, entered an information plea to the single charge and as a Range 1 offender, will serve the sentence at 30% with credit for 45 days already served.

A man wanted in DeKalb County on a parole violation who led Crossville Police on a mid-day pursuit traveling city streets on an ATV just two weeks earlier, pleaded guilty in Cumberland County Criminal Court May 6.
