The Ecru Farmer’s market opened up with a great success this past Thursday. Vendors and shoppers alike enjoyed spending time in the green space right behind Patty Turk’s office. Smiles were everywhere and the music from James Goolsby permeated the air creating a festival like atmosphere. Monday afternoon, June 9 people lined the highway to watch the giant 120 foot cross be at last raised. The metal cross was bolted onto the red base and then more metal will be welded all the way to the concrete. The giant cross of Pontotoc is set to be delivered next Tuesday, May 27. It will take some nine to ten working days to get it put up. Saganaw Steel in Birmingham, Alabama fabricated the white cross. “I am glad to see us take this next step,” said Reggie Collums who was given the responsibility by God to see that this got accomplished. Collums said once the cross gets here, Rozier construction will be in charge of putting the cross up.

Pontotoc County will observe Memorial Day this Monday, May 26, 11 a.m. on the Pontotoc Co. Courtsquare; the program will be MC’d by Chief Warrant Officer Christiana McCoy of the Mississippi Army National Guard. Memorial Day is set aside to specifically honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. In case of rain the services will be moved to the First Choice Pavilion located by the Tanglefoot Trail across from Reeder Farm Supply.

The Ecru Board of Aldermen heard an encouraging report on the upcoming starting of the Farmer’s Market expanding to the town come June. Julia McDowell said that the Ecru Farmers market is shooting for a mid-June opening and will run through mid-August, when the produce starts slowing down. However, we will re-evaluate that. It is according to the growing season and the needs of the farmer,” she noted.

The Pontotoc county Board of Supervisors recently approved the appointment of Joy Chunn to the Pontotoc County Library Board of Trustees to fill the vacancy of one appointee from Pontotoc County. The board also approved for the emergency purchase of two rail cars with wing walls from The Rail Road Yard for the fourth district to be installed on Rowland Road. Because of the Memorial Day the Progress will be having early deadlines. Early advertising and copy deadlines for the May 28 paper will be Wednesday and Thursday, May 21 and 22, due to the Progress office being closed for Monday. Deadlines for the May 28 paper are as follows: legal notices are due by 12 noon Wednesday, May 21; classified ads and all copy including church announcements and community news and advertisements are due by 11 a.m. Thursday, May 22.
