He served as the Advocate-General of Madras from 1906 to 1908, and later as a puisne judge on the Madras High Court from 1908 to 1915. In 1915, he was appointed to the Viceroy’s Executive Council as the all-India Education Member—a rare honor for an Indian under British rule.
