While the interest and energy around supply chains has reached new heights lately, the discipline—in practice if not in name—actually predates civilization and has been the secret behind many amazing episodes throughout history. Because the practice of supply chain management goes far back in history, there is a great deal we can learn from innovators and leaders in the discipline. By studying the past, we can be inspired to further develop our skillsets to advance the field.

The idea for creating a Supply Chain Hall of Fame originated in 2016 during a CSCMP board meeting. Brian Hancock, who at the time was an executive vice president of the Kansas City Southern Railway, argued that the discipline had sufficiently matured to be worthy of its own Hall of Fame. There were many innovators and leaders in supply chain who deserved to be celebrated and honored, he said, and some innovations deserved more acknowledgement from the general public than they were receiving.
