I realize I’m a day late with this newsletter, but upon hearing that the Colorado Rockies would promote shortstop Ryan Ritter, I wanted to wait a day until we’d seen his MLB debut. That happened last night, along with this:Ryan Ritter, Ladies and Gentlemen pic.twitter.com/pTMIwAnRZd— Colorado Rockies (@Rockies) June 7, 2025With that hit, Ritter became the first player in Rockies history with a first-hit triple.

The historically bad Colorado Rockies (11-50) entered loanDept Park hoping for a win to complete a sweep, something that had seemed impossible only three days earlier. Cal Quantrill was on the mound for the Miami Marlins, raising the question of whether familiarity would benefit the Rockies or their former pitcher. When Quantrill left the game after the fifth innings, the Rockies had a 2-0 lead. They added one run to it and then managed to cling to a their one-run lead to take the win, 3-2.

It was a running joke in the Colorado Rockies clubhouse. “He’ll be so glad you’re here,” one of the young pitchers said. “He’s been waiting for you.”“He” referred to relief pitcher Ryan Rolison; “you” would be the Rockies’ beat writers. On May 11, the Rockies' 2018 first-round draft pick had finally been called up, though he did not make his MLB debut until May 13 against the Texas Rangers.

Daniel Álvarez-Montes broke the news on Monday:The Colorado Rockies’ decision to sign yet another veteran utility player — especially one with primary defensive experience at shortstop and second base — made little sense. It might have a month ago. That was when Ezequiel Tovar went on the IL with a hip injury, Thairo Estrada was recovering from a wrist fracture, Tyler Freeman was out with an oblique issue, and Aaron Schunk suffered a groin strain.
