    Next week, Mexican communities in Metro Detroit will celebrate Cinco de Mayo, a holiday that celebrates the date of the Mexican army's 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican war. In the United States, the day celebrates Mexican culture and heritage, complete with food, music, and dancing. Celebrations will take place throughout the weekend of May 3 and 4, but the official day of festivity will fall on Monday, May 5.

    There are likely people in our community who can recall having been taught by Mrs. Weslyn A. Bennett in the Inkster School District. Bennett, who moved to Inkster with her husband in 1943, had obtained her teaching certification from Stowe Teachers College and taught in Inkster Schools, later earning both a bachelor's and master's degrees from Eastern Michigan University. A well-loved and respected educator, Bennett retired in 1976.

    Henry Ford College in Dearborn is offering astronomy enthusiasts the opportunity to explore the universe through free Hammond Planetarium shows. Henry Ford College (HFC) will present 10 free shows at the Hammond Planetarium in the Science Building on its main campus through June 18. The shows will run from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. on selected Wednesday and Friday evenings and will introduce star gazers to seasonal nighttime skies and will cover topics such as space and time and the summer solstice.
