Kenosha County Parks Director Matthew Collins will depart his position effective Jan. 14 as he pursues a new opportunity as Public Works Director for the Village of Whitefish Bay, County Executive Samantha Kerkman announced today. In his new role, Collins will lead the Public Works operation in the suburban Milwaukee village where he and his family have lived throughout his tenure with Kenosha County, Kerkman noted.

Since my pre-teen days, I have been a fan of "road" stories, be they books, articles, essays or short stories. When my wife, Liz, and I pack up and travel by car a couple of times a year, those stories come flooding back. Many people are familiar with "On the Road," Jack Kerouac's tale of the cross-country search of Dean Moriarty and Sal Paradise for truth and some deeper meaning of life. Other than having the best title, it was never my favorite "road" story.

The deadly firestorm in Hawaii and Hurricane Idalia's watery storm surge helped push the United States to an annual record for the number of weather disasters that cost at least $1 billion. And there's still four months to go on what's looking more like a calendar of calamities. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said Monday there have been 23 weather extreme events in America that cost at least $1 billion this year through August. That breaks the annual record of 22 set in 2020.

Local officials gathered Wednesday to celebrate the recent completion of a roundabout at the intersection of Kenosha County highways A and Y (Seventh Street and 22nd Avenue) in the Village of Somers. The project, which the county conducted in partnership with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, replaced a 4-way stop intersection with a single-lane roundabout.
