    Democrats are looking for answers. They want to figure out why Vice President Kamala Harris lost so much ground to former (and future) President Donald Trump. To paraphrase President Kennedy, this defeat has 100 fathers. One of those fathers is certainly the Inflation Reduction Act. The IRA was wrong from the start. It was rammed through Congress without a single Republican vote (Harris broke the tie in the Senate). It tried to reduce inflation by massively increasing government spending.

    Lore has it that, after winning a victory on Roman soil but losing most of his army in the process, King Pyrrhus was reluctant to accept congratulations. Instead, he warned his generals: “Another such victory over the Romans, and we are undone.” Hence the term Pyrrhic victory. Trade union leaders in the United States today seem to specialize in similar victories. Instead of learning from their mistakes, they launch more work stoppages that endanger their members.

Bill Clinton and Al Gore rode the slogan, “It’s the Economy, Stupid,” to an historic victory. Much has changed, but the importance of the economy has not. In these days following Labor Day, we will soon find out whether Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, the fresh-faced Democratic duo this time, will support a policy that helps workers.
