Perhaps the most striking aspect of this 0-95 handicap concerns an entry held by the Richard Fahey-trained Strong Warrior. One of two unbeaten sprinters in a ten-strong field, the son of Mehmas remains eligible for Royal Ascot’s Group 1 Commonwealth Cup. Strong Warrior graduates to handicaps on a mark of 91 following wins in small-field minor events at Ayr and Pontefract, but he made the final declarations for a Newbury Listed event last month and is clearly held in high regard.

Quirke On Parole7.30 Wetherby1pt winI'm hoping punters won’t need Quirke On Parole to get them out of jail, but Mark Walford’s filly looks equipped to do so if necessary by landing Wetherby’s 1m2f handicap (7.30). The lightly raced three-year-old is bred to be significantly better than her mark of 52, with relatives Financer and Whatacracker currently rated 81 and 61 respectively.

This is as competitive a race as you could wish to see at Chelmsford. A maximum field was declared, and two key players are drawn wider than ideal. Silver Samurai (stall 12) was a good second in a similar race at Kempton recently when sporting a tongue-tie. That appendage clearly worked, while Grand Karat (11) put a moderate effort at that track behind him with a solid fourth at Newcastle. Wider still is Sir Mark Prescott's interesting handicap newcomer Sheriff's Court (14).

What’s the big story? It’s the Saturday before the Betfred Derby, and the ITV action from Haydock, York and Chester features Group races and red-hot, big-field handicaps as a mini heatwave is forecast. The Group 3 Betfred John of Gaunt Stakes (3.33) at Haydock sees the seasonal reappearance of the popular Kinross, who won this race in 2021 under Frankie Dettori. Now an eight-year-old, the 11-time scorer is reported ready to roll by trainer Ralph Beckett, but would ideally prefer more cut underfoot.
