ROANOKE RAPIDS — On Tuesday, Kaitlyn May and Alayzia Moody were recognized and presented with the Benevolence Award and Recognition Committee scholarship awards during a Roanoke Rapids City Council meeting. Krista Rourk, a BARC committee member, presented the awards alongside Battalion Chief B.J. Harris, who is with the Roanoke Rapids Fire Department. Rourk said the committee is comprised of six city staff members from each department.

A grand jury indicted former Halifax County Sheriff’s Office lieutenant John Bozard last week in connection with a March 2024 shooting incident. On June 9, the Superior Court Division of the General Court of Justice returned a true bill of indictment after a grand jury heard evidence presented by District Attorney Kim Scott of Prosecutorial District 7. A panel of 12 grand jurors found probable cause that Bozard committed a crime.

Since June 9, 1995, C&W has been at 1119 E. 10th St., providing flowers for birthdays, weddings, funerals, and other special occasions. The Scotland Neck Board of Commissioners selected Austin Holland as the new police chief. Mayor Eddie Braxton told the Herald a special called meeting was held on Monday for the board to interview Holland for the position. Braxton said there were four applicants, Holland being the only one interviewed. "He was the only one interviewed because of his background and achievements and his education," he said.

SCOTLAND NECK — Sylvan Heights Bird Park broke ground on Saturday, paving the way for its highly anticipated penguin exhibit called Penguin Point. Ginny Lewis resigned Wednesday as the Roanoke Valley Chamber of Commerce’s president/CEO.
