Not sure how I noticed this, but I was surprised to find that my 10-cent bottle refund fee is taxable. So the refund fee is 0.10 + .1025 x .10 = $0.11025. COSTCO places an A after taxable items, Trader Joes puts a T before the item. When I pointed this out to Trader Joes, they didn’t believe it until they saw it. If I take the bottle to a refund center, if I can find one, do I get $0.11025 back? Unlikely. Since most of us just toss the bottles in the recycle bin, who gets the refund fee?
