One of my courses in seminary—a half-century ago!—had a lasting impact on my thinking. It was about world religions, and especially helpful for me was an assigned text, Christian Faith and Other Faiths, by Stephen Neill, then a bishop in the Church of South India. In presenting the Gospel to a person from another religious perspective, Neill wrote, we should invite the person to take an honest look at the Jesus of the New Testament.

A liberal acquaintance told me recently that while he generally dislikes evangelicals, he doesn't find me to be as bad as the rest: "At least you don't rant about wanting to establish a theocracy!" I decided to accept what he said as a compliment, even though I regretted not coming clean with him about theocracy. Truth be told, my wife and I do belong to a pro-theocracy organization. Indeed, we attend its meetings every week.
