Hogan Lovells announced the closure of 3 of its offices in Johannesburg, Sydney, and Warshaw in the coming months, with 120 professionals to be laid off. The firm said it is focusing on its key markets. There had reportedly been challenges in maintaining the profitability levels of the Warsaw office. K&L Gates and Weil Gotshal left Warsaw in the last 5 years.

Orrick, fresh on its recent reported losses in Italy, has shut down in Shanghai and will redeploy most of its lawyers to its remaining Beijing office. It is also closing in Taipei, Taiwan, following the departure of its permanent lawyers to Baker Botts. Weil Gotshal & Manges in contrast has announced the closure of its Beijing office and indicated it is reviewing its position in Shanghai. In the same vein, it is reported that Kirkland & Ellis has let go some 9 capital markets lawyers based in Asia.

The last month has seen some interesting movement in bonus schemes in European law firms. In January, Swedish firm Mannheimer Swartling announced a change in its bonus scheme for associates. The bonus is no longer assessed on hours worked but operates as a profit share, thought to be equivalent to 2 months’ salary. This aligns the associate bonus to the firm’s pure lockstep model for partner remuneration and represents a shift from the previous billable hours-based approach.

AbstractImproving nutrition security in sub-Saharan Africa under increasing climate risks and population growth requires a strong and contextualized evidence base. Yet, to date, few studies have assessed climate-smart agriculture and nutrition security simultaneously. Here we use an integrated assessment framework (iFEED) to explore stakeholder-driven scenarios of food system transformation towards climate-smart nutrition security in Malawi, South Africa, Tanzania and Zambia.
