Two boys have been sentenced for rioting outside a hotel used by asylum seekers – actions that were part of widespread disorder seen in the UK last summer. The pair, aged 14 and 17, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty in February to their role in violence outside a Holiday Inn in Tamworth, Staffordshire, on 4 August. A judge told the older boy his actions were "fuelled by hatred for those who didn't look like you or sound like you".

Birmingham City Council has announced fewer bin collections, dimmed streetlights and less road maintenance will be among measures to help balance its books. The authority is planning to cut about £148m of spending while increasing council tax by 7.49% in the coming financial year. It effectively declared itself bankrupt in September 2023, and was forced to find at least £300m in savings and sell assets worth £750m by April 2026.

Boxer Nathan Heaney has been formally inducted into his home city's sporting hall of fame. Olympic swimmers Norman Wainwright and Bob Leivers were the other new inductees added to the list in Stoke-on-Trent. Middleweight champion Heaney attended a ceremony at Stoke Town Hall on Thursday to mark his induction. "I've got an amazing following and I try my best at every occasion to tell people that Stoke-on-Trent is the best place ever," he said.
