Men, I’ve heard, aren’t doing too well. They are lonely. They are depressed. They are underemployed, undereducated, and underloved. As a woman, I have empathy for male suffering because I have empathy for all human suffering. Yes, suffering is part of life, but I’m of the humble opinion that we are all doing far too much of it, particularly considering how many resources and how much knowledge we have at our disposal.

I’m not going to start with my favorite part of the recent New Liberal Podcast with (author of Of Boys and Men and founder of the American Institute for Boys and Men). I’m going to start with the part that kinda shocked me. Reeves told (podcast host and author of the very funny and astute Infinite Scroll newsletter) that he was reliably informed that Democratic Party leadership deliberately chose to give up on men and focus entirely on getting women to the polls in the last election.

If the Democrats conclude that sexism propelled Donald Trump to victory, their spell in the political wilderness will last a lot longer than four years. In the immediate aftermath of the election, many progressive commentators are suggesting that many men were simply not willing to vote for a woman, and especially not for a Black woman. But if progressives dismiss whole swaths of the electorate as misogynists, they will send even more men running toward the political right.

The Democrats are now playing catch-up. Kamala Harris has launched an “opportunity agenda” for Black men, promising action to support entrepreneurs, regulate crypto and recruit more male teachers. She is reported to be considering an appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast, which has an enormous audience of mostly men. Democratic strategists seem to have realized belatedly that it will be hard to win without male votes. The question is whether this is too little, too late.
