The Ardrey Kell High School girls' soccer team continued its wild ride through the NCHSAA 4A playoffs Tuesday, beating Charlotte Catholic 2-1 in overtime to take the NCHSAA 4A Western Regional championship game. And Catholic was 20.3 seconds from winning itself. Instead, Ardrey Kell (22-3-4) won its 12th straight game and upset the No. 10 team in America. The Knights advance to the 4A state final for the third time in four years.

You probably shouldn't be surprised that the N.C. 3A Western Regional championship girls' soccer match Monday night was a defensive struggle. Between them, Lake Norman Charter and South Point had allowed 31 goals in 49 games with 33 total shutouts. But after a scoreless first half, South Point's Mackenzie Crill scored with 22 minutes left. That was the only goal in the state semifinal and was enough to send the Red Raiders to their third straight state championship game.
