In late January, the realty company Double U Development spent nearly $9 million to acquire the rectangular 7,600 square foot property at 144 Greenpoint Avenue, known more colloquially as the Polonaise Terrace. While Double U have yet to announce plans for the space, as is the case with any high-profile purchase throughout North Brooklyn, gossip and rumors about what may come have spread like fumes wafting from Blissville recycling plants.

Last Thursday evening’s convocation by the Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park began with dancing on a few graves. Among the first slides was a time-lapse video of the CitiStorage building’s demolition. This was met by raucous applause, seeing as the monstrous blight was the largest obstruction to knock down before the long-held dream of 27.5-acre park along the East River waterfront could become a reality.

There’s something deeply depressing about an internet jukebox in a bar. That shiny machine with white and blue hues casting blinding brightness like a massive phone screen. Being presented with the entire world of music at your fingertips creates decision paralysis and robs the bar of any feel or vibe.

I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. The opulent Grand Masonic Lodge nestled behind nondescript scaffolding in the Flatiron District. The sprawling atrium of the Brooklyn Army Terminal where grass grows alongside the ancient rails. And whatever goes on inside those massive metal eggs hugging the edge of the Newtown Creek. I went to my first Open House in 2019 as soon as I moved to the city, and was immediately addicted, attending at least one tour every post-pandemic year.

On February 8th, a tenant from 40 Oak Street / 23 West Street, an affordable housing lottery building that shares two addresses in Greenpoint’s new West Wharf complex, was outside smoking when they saw a woman in distress. By then, 40 Oak/23 West had had enough package thefts that everyone was on guard. Word was going around that the building’s management company, Halcyon, tried charging a tenant $160 just to view the surveillance camera.
