Every song on Taj Mahal’s De Old Folks at Home was an inspiration to me as a kid and still lifts me, pleases me, makes me smile and giggle and I am transported to whatever story he is telling. I love sitting on the porch with him, or watching the big frog in the pond with him, or especially walking with him in Annie’s world. Or rather her lover’s world.

I have spent a lifetime in motels and hotels, back stage rooms and upstairs dressing areas. many stairs. pieces of paper with names of songs and songs with paper wings made of fire. I’ve sung my heart out and my heart has kept on beating, crazy like, and when I am alone and sleeping I can hear the heart beat of a collective story. A collection by an editor whose shape we cannot or will not See. But we sure do like Their work. i look up alot. i watch birds all the time. I look down, too.

I started this podcast last fall. I began the series with this final episode and worked backwards. As I did so, I realized what I meant by the American singer-songwriters. They are heroes, just flat out. They are archetypes, they represent. There are wonderful singer-songwriters whose work is part of the entire language of a generation or two, but the writer herself, not…a star. Not a unique personality that others copy.
