Two days after a second round of talks between the United States and Iran on a potential new nuclear deal, President Donald Trump spoke by phone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The call focused on the Iranian nuclear threat and ongoing efforts to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, including the release of hostages. It was their first conversation since Netanyahu’s visit to the White House two weeks ago, when Trump announced direct talks with Iran.

National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, head of the far-right Jewish Power party, is set to travel to the United States on April 21 for a weeklong visit, in his first official trip abroad since joining the current Netanyahu government in December 2022. Ben-Gvir and his colleague, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who heads the far-right Religious Zionism party, were both shunned by the Biden administration, which even contemplated imposing sanctions on them.

Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, the country’s chief negotiator in the now-defunct Israel-Hamas ceasefire, met Tuesday in Washington with US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, days after Egypt put forward a new proposal to temporarily end fighting in the Strip. Israel's Kan public broadcaster reported that the meeting took place in Washington on Tuesday. Contacted by Al-Monitor, a White House spokesperson was not immediately available for comment.

The Israeli military announced Wednesday that it had resumed ground operations in central Gaza, a day after airstrikes killed more than 400 Palestinians, breaking the fragile ceasefire reached in January. The military said it had retaken parts of the Netzarim Corridor, which divides Gaza from east to west, and the operations were aimed at expanding the buffer zone.
